Plastic pollution is one of the most fundamental issues threatening the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems worldwide. Microplastics are found everywhere, from mountaintops to the deepest oceans and even inside our bodies. Unfortunately, addressing this crisis is beyond the ability of any single country to solve. Despite the global consensus, no comprehensive program has existed until now.
Now, there is hope:
Last year, a new resolution was introduced to create a global legal framework regulating the use of plastic. The resolution was discussed at the fifth session of the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA-5.2) and has been endorsed by more than 10,000 civil society and community groups from 175+ countries, creating an unprecedented momentum to push for real change and pass the treaty.
How can you participate?
We, the undersigned, call upon the leaders of governments with the support of our communities, businesses, and nongovernmental organizations to sign the Global Plastics Treaty.
This treaty will:
Negotiate a new legally binding global instrument on plastic pollution, including measures along the entire life cycle of plastic
Promote a circular economy action plan and limit single-use plastics
Establish National Action Plans to prevent litter/plastics from entering our rivers and oceans
Enhance investment planning and stimulate innovation to prevent plastic from entering the ecosystem
There is a bright future that is free of plastic in our food, water, and the air we breathe.
